To check the stability and speed of your home internet there are two tools you can use. Use these tools directly from your home PC/laptop BEFORE you connect to our VPN or log into our network.
To check the speed, www.speedtest.net is the best tool to use. It will let you the speed the computer sees to the internet. Average home download speeds range from 100MB to 1,000MB and more depending on your level of service. Download speeds of 10-20MB and less will cause poor performance issues when connecting to our network VPN.
To check the stability, do the following:
1) Click start and type CMD in the search bar. Start Command Prompt.
2) In Command Prompt type the following: ping www.google.com -t
You can replace www.google.com with other sites like www.facebook.com, www.msn.com, or any other major website for another test.
This will give you something like this
The time will tell you how quickly it reaches the site. 1-2ms is excellent while anything over 100ms is poor. Instead of "Reply from" you may see "Request time out". These are when the ping takes too long due to a network drop. If you see one occationally, not a big deal. If you see a lot of them, especially 2-3+ in a row, this will cause connection issues with the VPN and Remote Desktop to our network. This could be due to internet service issues by your carrier, and I would recommend having them take a look at the line to determine where the issue is.
3) Type <CTRL>C to stop the ping test, and close the command prompt window.
Using these tools can assist with determining if your home internet connection is the root of any VPN/Remote Desktop connection or performance issues you may be experiencing.
