Three things to try before contacting IT

While they sound simple and possible common sense, you would be surprised how many times these three things will solve the problem.  Give them a try before contacting IT support and they might just solve YOUR problem!

  1. Is it plugged in?  Yes i've run into many things that weren't working or "broken" simply because it wasn't plugged in correct.  From "broken" wired keyboards to loose or disconnected network and monitor cables, a simple check that all cables are connected securely should be a first check.
  2. Is it turned on?  Most common in printer issues, but applies to everything with a power cord.  They all work better when they are turned on.
  3. Did you reboot/restart/repower?  From the Dell/Wyse boxes, to network switches, to printers.  Everything with a power cord sometimes gets a glitch that can only be cleared by turning it off, then back on again.  And for Windows, it is almost Gospel that you should log out of Windows and then back in again and give whatever your were trying another try.  Windows is famous for glitchy type events.
